Biography of Kazi Nazrul Islam | Reasons for Excellence

Kazi Nazrul Islam (24 May 1899 – 29 August 1976) was a renowned Bengali poet, litterateur, musician and philosopher. He is known as the "Rebel Poet" and is particularly remembered for his unique contribution to Bengali literature and music. Through his literary works and musical creations, he ushered in a new awakening in the life of the Bengali nation.


Early life

Kazi Nazrul Islam was born in 1899 in the village of Churulia in Burdwan district of West Bengal. His father, Kazi Fakir Ahmed, was an imam of a mosque and a shrine attendant. Nazrul's childhood was spent in poverty and struggle. After his father's death at a young age, he took responsibility for the family's financial situation and earned his living by doing various types of work.

Education and literary works

Nazrul's primary education began in the village maktab. Later, he joined the army and while there, he began his literary pursuits. His first poem "Mukti" was published in 1920. After that, he wrote famous poems, songs and essays one after another. Among his famous poems are "Bidrohi", "Dhumketu", "Prloy Shikha".

Musical life

Nazrul Sangeet is named after the songs he composed. He composed more than 4000 songs, which are one of the treasures of Bengali culture. His songs contain themes of rebellion, love, nature, humanity and spirituality.
Politics and Social Thought
Nazrul was an extraordinary social thinker and he fought against the injustices of society through his writings. He was very outspoken against the British imperialist rule and his writings were a source of fear for the British rulers. For this, he had to be imprisoned several times.

Late Life

Nazrul became seriously ill towards the end of his life and lost his speech. In 1972, the Bangladesh government anointed him as the National Poet and brought him to Dhaka. He died in Dhaka in 1976 and was buried on the premises of Dhaka University.
